Go Purple with the D-backs on Friday

By Josh Greene

Fans won’t be the only ones breaking out their purple, teal and copper threads for September’s World Championship Reunion Weekend, presented by Gila River Casinos.

On Friday, the D-backs will go retro for one game only, donning the franchise’s sleeveless, purple pinstripes from 2001 as they host the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.    (more…)

Gibson praises ace Kennedy

Ian Kennedy has been dominant and then some throughout 2011.

He entered Thursday night’s start against San Diego with a stellar 18-4 record and a 2.96 ERA. In 194.1 innings pitched, Kennedy has struck out 167 batters.

The 2011 season had been a forgettable one for Aaron Hill.

He was hitting just .225 with six homers and a .270 OBP for the Blue Jays. Then things changed dramatically on August 23, when Hill and fellow Toronto infielder John McDonald were shipped to Arizona in exchange for Kelly Johnson.

Strikeout pitchers are often considered the most exciting in baseball, but left-hander Patrick Corbin would much rather induce a first-pitch ground out or receive an inning-ending double play.

In his third season in professional baseball, the southpaw has realized the advantages of pitching deep into ballgames.

Two of a Kind

Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson have turned into the D-backs’ formidable one-two punch

By Greg Dillard

It was a misty June afternoon as Ian Kennedy approached the tee box, taking a couple of practice swings before driving his ball down the middle of the fairway. Daniel Hudson followed, splitting the same fairway with his tee shot.

The two, along with fellow starter Joe Saunders, were playing the 95-year-old Oakland Hills Country Club course during an off-day on the D-backs’ road trip to Michigan during Interleague play.

By the looks of it, the MLB hitters of tomorrow won’t have any easier a time of it down the road, either.

Meet D-backs pitching prospects Patrick Corbin, Tyler Skaggs, Trevor Bauer, Charles Brewer and Jarrod Parker. Chances are the names are pretty familiar already. This quintet has combined for 379 strikeouts in 391.1 innings pitched and a 29-17 record at Double-A in the Southern League this season. (more…)

Joe Saunders must like facing the Padres.

Last month, the southpaw silenced the San Diego lineup in a dominating performance at Petco Park. He tossed eight shutout innings before yielding a single run in the bottom of the ninth.

On Saturday night, Saunders toed the rubber against the Padres once again, and similar to his July 26outing in San Diego, the left-hander quieted the Padre offense for seven innings. He scattered four hits and allowed a lone run while striking out three as the D-backs held on to a 3-1 victory.
