Collin Cowgill did it all for the Aces.
He hit for average and power, while displaying speed and playing solid defense in the outfield for Triple-A Reno.
Cowgill’s stellar season with the Aces earned him a promotion to the D-backs’ big league club on July 26. He was also recently named the Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year – the first Aces player to win the award.
He batted a red-hot .354 to go with 13 home runs and 70 RBI while with Reno. He also drilled 140 total hits and swiped 30 bases. Although he’s no longer playing with the Aces, Cowgill was still thrilled to be named ROY.
“It’s always nice if you get some kind of accolade for something you’ve done,” Cowgill said. “Like you said, I’m glad I’m here now. I’d like it to be one time in that league and that’s it.”
With Reno, Cowgill was an essential aspect to the Aces’ pennant race. Now with the D-backs, he’s once again embroiled in a push for the playoffs.
“What a great season it’s been so far, not just individually but for both teams,” Cowgill said. “I know Reno won last night, first game in the playoffs against Sacramento, who we had a couple battles with throughout the year. Obviously here, the way we’re playing right now and how exciting it is … we’re just trying to finish up strong, and get into the playoffs.”
Since joining the D-backs, Cowgill has posted a .225 batting average in 27 games. The right-handed hitter has also collected 6 runs, 4 RBI, and 3 stolen bases.
His finest performance came on August 28 against the Padres. Cowgill went 4-for-4 with a double and a homer, powering the D-backs to a 6-1 win over the Padres.
While he’s appeared in less than 30 games, Cowgill has learned to make the most of his playing time.
“It’s been great,” Cowgill said. “I know there are opportunities for me, and (D-backs manager Kirk Gibson) knows what’s best for me in terms of when to play me and when not to. I’m just happy to crack that lineup when I can and help the team win as much as I can.”
