Fans won’t be the only ones breaking out their purple, teal and copper threads for September’s World Championship Reunion Weekend, presented by Gila River Casinos.
On Friday, the D-backs will go retro for one game only, donning the franchise’s sleeveless, purple pinstripes from 2001 as they host the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.
“I felt that if we were going to recognize and celebrate the 10th anniversary of our World Championship,” said D-backs President and CEO Derrick Hall, “then we should also honor the players and the uniform that we wore at that time. It’s a no brainer for me. There’s still so many of our fans that love those colors, and I don’t blame them. You still see a lot of it in seats, which is fun. I just think it’s a way for everybody to remember what it was like in 2001 and to be able to put on the old jerseys again and celebrate together.”
For the D-backs, there’s more involved in the process than just digging through the ballpark archives to un-box some old uniforms from storage. That’s because there aren’t any.
The team purged their inventory of purple pinstripes after the 2006 season in favor of their current Sedona red and Sonoran sand look, meaning the D-backs’ clubhouse staff has been diligently working to restock player lockers with throwback uniforms from their current manufacturer, Majestic.
“When we switched colors, we got rid of everything we had that was purple,” D-backs Visiting Clubhouse and Equipment Manager Bob Doty said. “We sent everything we had to the Dominican Republic. For this game, we had to go get brand-new everything made, including batting helmets, hats and even jackets for pitchers who may need them. It’s not a huge job for us, but it is a lot of stuff.
“The uniform company grabs every player in Spring Training in terms of their sizes, so I’m sending Majestic a roster, saying every guy should get one jersey and one pair of pants. I called and got the undershirts and called the sock company for the purple socks. They’ll also send out purple belts. It was weird seeing these again after the samples came in.”
With any late-season game, real estate in the D-backs’ clubhouse is a hot commodity thanks to the advent of the 40-man roster – something that Doty and his staff already accounted for when it comes to making sure there’s enough throwbacks to go around as the team pays homage to its 2001 World Championship club.
“These will look exactly the same as what we wore back then, Doty added. “Everybody will see these and think back to the way it used to be. And it’ll be cool.”
