Being a fan of ballparks, it’s always interesting to be able to see somewhere new.

Born way too late to have experienced the likes of Ebbets Field, the Polo Grounds, Shibe Park, Sportsman’s Park or any of the other classics that now only live on in other people’s memories and sepia-toned newsreel footage, to get to see Miller Park for the first time in Saturday’s Game 1 of the D-backs-Brewers National League Division Series was an understandable thrill. After a 17-year playing career that also included two World Series titles (1984, ’88), a 1988 NL MVP Award and stops in Detroit, Los Angeles, Kansas City and Pittsburgh, the Michigan-born Gibson toiled as a team broadcaster in Detroit before becoming a bench coach for his former Tigers teammate-turned-manager Trammell from 2003-05.  (more…)

NLDS Preview: Brewers vs. D-backs

The past two seasons had been forgettable ones for the D-backs, with Arizona sputtering to consecutive last places finishes in 2009 and ‘10. They fell victim to high strikeout totals and a lackluster bullpen, with the postseason being a distant thought.

Even with all the Arizona Diamondbacks’ regular-season success in 2011, manager Kirk Gibson is the first to admit his team isn’t close to where it wants to be.

That may seem like a contradiction for a ballclub that’s in the midst of their first National League Division Series appearance since 2007, but considering this student of personal motivation and visual goal-setting has long valued the power of positive reinforcement to envision all possibilities, there is always room for improvement. Always.
