Gibson praises ace Kennedy

Ian Kennedy has been dominant and then some throughout 2011.

He entered Thursday night’s start against San Diego with a stellar 18-4 record and a 2.96 ERA. In 194.1 innings pitched, Kennedy has struck out 167 batters.

Two of a Kind

Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson have turned into the D-backs’ formidable one-two punch

By Greg Dillard

It was a misty June afternoon as Ian Kennedy approached the tee box, taking a couple of practice swings before driving his ball down the middle of the fairway. Daniel Hudson followed, splitting the same fairway with his tee shot.

The two, along with fellow starter Joe Saunders, were playing the 95-year-old Oakland Hills Country Club course during an off-day on the D-backs’ road trip to Michigan during Interleague play.

Joe Saunders must like facing the Padres.

Last month, the southpaw silenced the San Diego lineup in a dominating performance at Petco Park. He tossed eight shutout innings before yielding a single run in the bottom of the ninth.

On Saturday night, Saunders toed the rubber against the Padres once again, and similar to his July 26outing in San Diego, the left-hander quieted the Padre offense for seven innings. He scattered four hits and allowed a lone run while striking out three as the D-backs held on to a 3-1 victory.

Ian Kennedy didn’t have his best stuff, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to win.

Kennedy delivered a winning performance for the D-backs in Friday’s series opener against the Mets. The right-hander shut down the New York lineup en route to his 15th win of the season. The victory now ties Kennedy with Roy Halladay for most wins in the National League.

First place in the National League West hung in the balance on Wednesday night, with the D-backs entering the day a slim half game behind the Giants.

But with the Pirates handing San Francisco a 9-2 loss earlier in the afternoon, the D-backs and Giants were tied atop the NL West standings, as Josh Collmenter toed the rubber vs. the Astros in his 16th start of the season and sole possession of first place on the line.

For the first four innings of Tuesday night’s matchup against the Astros, it appeared as if the D-backs were destined for another disheartening loss. Houston’s red-hot offense picked up where it left off on Monday by plating seven early runs off Arizona starter Jason Marquis.

Marquis was knocked out of the game early and the D-backs faced a six-run deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the game took a startling turn.

Saunders continues strong season

When a team has a pair of dominant pitchers atop its starting rotation, it’s easy to overlook the remaining three starters. In 2011, Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson have undoubtedly been dominant as the anchors of the D-backs’ pitching staff.

Then there’s Joe Saunders. The southpaw has been reliable and then some for Arizona down the stretch this season. After a slow start, he’s continually put the D-backs in a position to win every time he toes the rubber.
